Deaf Education
Our purpose built Deaf Education block is staffed by a Teacher of the Deaf, an Itinerant
Teacher and a team of Communicators. Students are included in regular classes wherever
possible and programme's are individualised according to need.
The Deaf Education facility comprises
- One large classroom.
- One small classroom.
- Resource room, Office and Kitchenette.
- A loop system is also available.
Our philosophy
Education is a partnership among equals
(Deaf and Hearing) involving parents, students, teachers, the school
and resource personnel, where all feel informed and involved in
the teaching and learning process. This partnership builds inspiration
and motivation.
We recognise New Zealand Sign Language as an official language which is an option to use in the classroom. Signed English and Oral English are also options for the students who choose to communicate in these languages.
Classes for the hearing
To aid in the acceptance of NZSL as an official language, New Zealand
Sign Language classes are offered and taught by a NZSL tutor to
interested staff and students. There is also a strong emphasis on
an understanding and appreciation of Deaf Culture and History.
