Science

The Science department has nine fully equipped Science labs. We also have a Trees for Survival native plant unit and our own horticulture beds.

Students can study Science through to Year 13, with Physics, Chemistry and Biology all available in both Year 12 and 13. A variety of courses are offered to allow for differing needs of students to be met.

In the Trees for Survival unit we grow native seedlings to be planted into our community. We have forged strong links with the Pit Park People and have already completed a planting in the native reserve within the Pit Park, adjacent to the school. The park was once an old quarry, the clay being used to make bricks at the brick-works on Featherston Street. The pit is now being turned into a recreational area.

Students are also encouraged to enter a variety of extension programmes we have on offer at the school. These include CREST, Science Fair, ICAS Science Competition, Sci-Tech Forum, Hands-On Science and other events as they arise in the school calendar.

Craig Steed is the HOD Science at Freyberg and works with a team of 12 other qualified Science educators (including two with PhDs) to ensure quality science education programmes within the school. Craig is heavily involved with NCEA at a national level, is the local president of Central Association of Science educators and was a 2008 recipient of a Woolf Fisher Fellowship.
