Senior Art Trip to the Capital
Wellington turned on perfect conditions for a group of senior Art, Design
and Photography students as we headed off on the bus on Thursday April 4.
First stop was the Pataka Gallery in Porirua, which always contains
interesting and challenging material. This time there was a feast of
contemporary New Zealand/Samoan art and an exhibit of Native American
prints.
On to explore the dealer galleries of central Wellington, where the high point had to be the $105,000 baroque confection at the Peter McLeavey Gallery. The proprietor is a Wellington icon in his own right and was charming in his enthusiastic welcome.
We lay back in a gentle but sad post-prandial trance to watch Aniwaniwa, about the drowning of land and memories when the hydro-electric scheme took over part of the Waikato. Then we moved upstairs to view a blockbusting finale at the City Art Gallery: "Last Riot", a multi-screen apocalyptic virtual Armageddon, with ritualised bloodless battles relentlessly moving towards the end of the human race.
Miss Elder's meticulous organisation and the impeccable behaviour of all
participants ensured a most enjoyable day for all.
