New Life-Skills Flat to be Built
As part of a 1.3 million dollar special needs building upgrade, a new life skills "Flat" is being built to help teach students important skills for independence like cooking, cleaning and doing laundry.
The flat is part of our independent living and life skills
program. Freyberg tends to be a popular school for such programs catering for
around 50 special needs students. The old flat hosted 10 of these but was
simply not big enough. Assistant Principal, Wendy Jochem explains "we
have had the student numbers, but we have been
really short on buildings".
Features of the new flat:
- A central Rumpus room and Lounge
- Fully equipped Kitchen and Dining room
- Bathroom, Toilet and Sickbay
- Laundry facilities
- Secluded Outdoor Recreation area
The other part of this building upgrade will involve doubling the size of the Craig Centre, adding classrooms, bathrooms, physio and exercise areas.
