Opening of Administration Block
On January 30th,
Freyberg's new 1.1 million dollar administration block
and performing arts centre was opened by former Freyberg student and Minister
of Education, Steve Maharey. A late substitute in for the otherwise engaged Hon. Chris Carter, Maharey spoke of the growing
trend towards less focus on a school hall and more on multi-use facilities.
The extensions have definitely been planned with multiple uses in mind. They create additional rehearsal space for Drama and Dance activities, which can be used as an indoors side of stage space for school productions. The extra office space allows for much needed floor space and seating in the deans/student center area, and allows for separate student/parent access to both the student centre and the office.
Maharey was pleased to be a part of the expansions of his school and spoke fondly of his memories of Freyberg's old Hall (as a student in the late 1960's). He specifically recalled a certain school dance once held in the hall, and his being dragged out of the hall - by the ear.
