Tournament Week 2008
Ten Freyberg teams travelled around the country for national "Tournament Week". Top achievements included silver medals in Table Tennis, and a second placing in Girls Soccer. The Girls 1st XI soccer team narrowly lost the grand final, and had four players selected for the tournament team.
Rugby
Freyberg's 1st XV Rugby team took part in a new regional tournament with five other schools, competing for the Mark Ranby Invitational Trophy.
The first two days were fantastic with three wins and a draw. However, on the third day the hectic playing schedule took it's toll losing their semi-final to Havelock North. Although not winners of the tournament, the tournament's most valuable player was awarded to Freyberg captain Matt Rennie who played "his heart out" (pictured).
Hockey
Our Girls Hockey team just missed out on a top three placing, finishing fourth in their competition. Boys Hockey had an eventful but disappointing tournament, failing to qualify in the top half of their competition over in Marton.
Table Tennis
Freyberg's Table Tennis Team beat all other Manawatu schools and gained a silver medal in the process finishing second in their competition. Team member Natalie Paterson also won a Gold in the girls doubles competition, and a silver in the girls singles. As one of the country's top secondary school table tennis players she will be competing in the Open Nationals in a few weeks time.
Soccer
Freyberg's 1st XI Girls Soccer team travelled to Whangarei to take part in their winter tournament, mostly playing against Auckland teams. They won all of their pool games, Quarter and Semi finals and advanced to the final undefeated. Unfortunately the girls lost 2 - 1 in the final, but four players were honoured with selection in the tournament team - Kelly Black, Jodi Curtis, Kim Nottingham and Nicole Robertson.
The 1st XI Boys Soccer team travelled to Wanganui each day to compete. The team lost players to illness, and found it difficult to maintain team cohesion, finishing unplaced in their tournament. Thanks for Mr Cresswell and Mr Fisher for taking the boys over to Wanganui each day.
Netball
Due to a Basketball/Netball clash, Freyberg's netball tournament team was made up of Senior A1, Senior A2 and Junior A players. The girls did well to win 4 of their 6 round robin games in the hot sun.
Basketball
Freyberg entered three teams into regional basketball tournaments, all trying to qualify for nationals next month. The senior boys team went to Napier and faced the toughest possible draw and were unfortunate to narrowly miss out on national qualification.
The Junior Girls basketball competed in Wanganui and were unable to win their important qualifier. At the time of writing, Senior Girls basketball results are not yet known.
