Mayor Applauds Freyberg Can-Drive
Palmerston North Mayor, Jono Naylor, applauded the efforts of
Freyberg this week when students raised over 1000 cans of food for local
food banks. Mr Naylor was delighted with the huge number of cans donated to
build a castle around him, and
reminded students of what can be achieved when everybody
pitches in "and brings their can".
Before being donated to the Salvation Army food-bank, the cans were used in a quick inter-house "Can Castle" competition. The four houses competed to build sculptures such as cars, animals and towers. The student organised event attracted a couple of hundred students and had a party atmosphere with disco lights, and music.
Event Organiser and Year 13 student Kelly Flemming was delighted with the support from Melody's New World who contributed around a quarter of the cans. The next biggest contribution came from the sponsorship of Head of School Mr Seumanu doing the can can in assembly.
