Ex-Pupil comes back to paint art class
Ex-Pupil, Karl Maughan, now a well-recognised Auckland landscape painter, came back to Freyberg this week to paint a huge mural on the art block as part of an upcoming TV series called New Art Land.

Enlisting and training about 20 senior students to help 'fill in the squares', Maughan was pleased and surprised with the roughly 30 metre long painting which wraps all the way around the three-classroom block.
Speaking to the cameras at the opening ceremony, principal Peter Brooks
was proud of the creative arts culture that has always existed in the school. Then as the band played, the cameras clicked and the few hundred
present cheered, the painting was unveiled - a stunning hyper-reality garden
landscape, equally effective from across the field as from close up.
- 20 students helped paint it.
- Five days to create.
- 30 metres wide, 2.2 metres tall.
- Estimated to be worth around $500,000 if painted on canvas.
