13PE Rock Climbing Trip

20 Year 13 students, in 2 vans, drove 700km, to sleep in 7 tents, for 4 days, climbing 23 metre tall natural rock walls in Waikato this week for 3 achievement standards.

Students had to plan and prepare the food, the itinerary, organise and book the facilities, instructors and transport, and prepare risk management. Students were assessed on rock climbing competency, leadership and planning skills, and keeping a journal, however the real achievement was something more. For many in 13PE, a class made up of national and regional sporting representatives, the highlight of the trip was pushing themselves to attempt and conquer climbs that were daunting, and tiring, with difficult hand/foot holds. By the end of the fourth day, the weather had become dodgy, everyone had tired arms, scraped hands, sore necks from looking up, and all three teachers had attempted a climb. The navigators didn't accidentally take any wrong turns on the way home, and the van games and singing slowly gave way to sleep.
