Freyberg Festival Changes 'Litter Culture'
Around 600 students and 50 teachers gathered at the Lido pools this week
for the inaugural Freyberg Festival - an event funded completely out of
money saved by reduced litter and vandalism at school. With bands,
volleyball, hydroslides, food stalls and a party atmosphere that lasted
until midnight, the event was a great success.
The festival started with a fund of $5,000, and everytime there were serious litter or vandalism problems, the amount was reduced by $100. By December 3rd two-thirds of the fund remained. This was enough to book out the Lido, and pay for bands, staging, and food stalls. Movies, and hired promo-king gear was unaffordable.
Within 48 hours later, the Freyberg Festival Facebook page was filled with dozens of messages of how 'cool' 'mean' or 'wicked' the event was. Mr Seumanu, who ran the festival, was pleased just to see so many people turn up and enjoy a festival the school had earnt by changing it's culture towards rubbish. It is also indicative of the culture within the school to see half of the teachers volunteering their time, despite PPTA strikes removing any obligation to attend.
