Relay for Life
Over 100 students and 40 staff members from Freyberg
High School gathered at Palmerston North's Relay for Life over this past
weekend to raise funds to help find a cure for cancer.
The event commenced with a lap by local cancer survivors, which included some staff at Freyberg. Over the next 24 hours, more than one hundred teams took to the 400m track, running or walking as many laps as possible.
Freyberg's team, with a Construction worker theme, was organised by senior students Brittany Andrew and Monique Hoogendoorn. The team came second overall in the 'number of laps' competition. Freyberg's effort also raised around $3000 for the Cancer Society of New Zealand.
Inspired by seeing the opening lap by cancer survivors, Freyberg student Daniel Kennerley spoke of his first Relay experience "Gee so many people have cancer and have survived it."
The money that Freyberg raised will be used by the Cancer Society within the region to support local branch activities, for equipment and to fund special projects.
