Freyberg Bands on Fire at Smokefree Rockquest
Competing against 30 bands from almost a dozen lower-North Island
schools, Freyberg’s four groups dominated the competition. All four groups
reached the top eight, and between them won five of the eight major prizes
including the overall major prize.
Year 13 Freyberg student Kelsey Lawn was the singer song-writer in the folk duo Sunbear who won the competition. She also won the Best Woman Musician for the second year in a row, netting her a total prize of $650. Kelsey now has the nationals to look forward to, with the next stage of the competition requiring footage of 15 minutes of original music to qualify for the finals in Hamliton. Blinders and Dragons - the Freyberg band that came third overall, also won the award for best original song (A prize worth $100).
